The Rise of Gyu-Katsu in Hong Kong- Steak Bar

Updated: Sep 19, 2019

While traditional Katsu is typically a panko-breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet, today we will be featuring Gyu-Katsu (a type of Beef Cutlet), which had been increasingly popular in Japan and Hong Kong.

Deep-fried Australian Wagyu Beef Cutlet -$278

A few weeks ago, I was invited to dine at Steak Bar, a steak expert specialising in Japanese style set meals in Causeway Bay. Besides, the typical ribeye steak, Steak Bar also serves prime flat iron steak, stone grilled beef, and of course, their most popular deep-fried US/Australian Wagyu Beef Cutlet. I’d never had deep fried beef before so I ended up ordering two different sets of deep fried beef cutlets to try to taste the difference between US prime beef and Australian Wagyu beef. When I was served the beef cutlets, they were already deep-fried in advance and were all cooked medium-rare. You could pick one piece of beef cutlet could fry it yourself. Personally, I fried the beef until it’s colour started to change which allowed for a juicy and tender internal texture in contrast with the crispy exterior. After trying the two types of beef, the Australian Wagyu definitely stood out, as it was more soft and tender compared to the more chewy and meaty US prime beef cutlet (which wasn’t bad either). All in all, both beef cutlets were very well-made and you could tell that the quality of the meat was indeed, very good.

All the beef sets also come with a small appetiser, salad and a bowl of Japanese rice. I really love how they added Japanese seasoning to the rice, it just adds another level to the rice and makes you want to gobble up the entire bowl! You are also given two ways to eat your beef cutlets, with rock salt or their house-made soy sauce (I would recommend you to try both and see which one matches your palate.)

Though the nutritional value of the food is questionable, this restaurant truly is a meat-lover’s heaven. And as Julia Child said, “The only time to eat diet food is while you're waiting for the steak to cook.” Check it out this summer!
